Fort Augustus to Oban

From here on in we were greeted every morning by throbbing thigh pain and a desire to stay in bed as long as possible, however the prospect of the flattest day of the whole trip was most welcome.

Loch Lochy Cycle Path

Also welcome was the opportunity to use a cycle track instead of the A82 which is a busy road and quite narrow in places. The off road route kept us on the north of Loch Lochy for 30 miles until rejoining the A82 at Fort William.

The cycle track was reasonably flat but rough in places and not well suited to bikes with thinner wheels, this was one of the few times I was glad we were on mountain bikes, because the scenery was amazing.

Once past Ben Nevis we had to endure the A82 along Loch Linnhe, complete with the sound of lorry air brakes being hurriedly applied on as the drivers spotted us just in time, until we got on the A828 at Ballachulish when things got a little more peaceful and a lot more scenic.

Once again the Sun began to make an appearance in places (3 days in Scotland with sunshine each day and no rain something's not right), the wind was on our back and Oban arrived in no time.

I had only ever visited Oban in torrential rain before and seeing the town on a clear summer evening it suddenly became clear why it is rated so highly.

Oban is a lively town with plenty of quality food and watering holes and it attracts people from all over Europe (I was the only British person in a 16 bed dorm in the Youth Hostel.)

There is a lot for the visitor to do and the surrounding scenery is spectacular. There must have been over a hundred people lined up outside the Youth Hostel just watching the sunset.

The spectacular sunset capped a fantastic day as far as scenery is concerned, but brought with it a little sadness. Deep down I knew that we had just seen the best this country has to offer and that, with 75% of the trip still to go, nothing else we could see was going to compare!
